A servo valve is a specialized type of directional control valve used in hydraulic systems to provide precise control over the flow of fluid to hydraulic actuators, such as cylinders or motors. Unlike conventional directional valves, servo valves are designed to offer exceptionally accurate and responsive control, making them ideal for applications requiring precise positioning, velocity control, or force regulation.

The primary function of a servo valve is to convert an electrical or mechanical input signal into precise hydraulic flow control, allowing for fine adjustments in the position, velocity, or force of hydraulic actuators. These valves typically incorporate a sophisticated feedback mechanism that ensures accurate and proportional control of fluid flow based on the input signal.

Servo valves are characterized by their high flow rates, low hysteresis, and rapid response times, making them suitable for demanding applications in industries such as aerospace, defense, manufacturing, and automation. They are commonly used in hydraulic systems for aircraft flight control surfaces, industrial robots, machine tools, and motion control systems.

There are two main types of servo valves: jet pipe servo valves and flapper nozzle servo valves.

Jet pipe servo valves utilize a jet of fluid to control the position of a servo spool within the valve. The position of the spool determines the flow rate through the valve, which in turn regulates the motion of the hydraulic actuator. Jet pipe servo valves are known for their high accuracy and dynamic response, making them suitable for precision motion control applications.

Flapper nozzle servo valves, on the other hand, use a flapper and nozzle arrangement to control fluid flow. The position of the flapper relative to the nozzle determines the flow rate through the valve, allowing for precise control over the motion of hydraulic actuators. Flapper nozzle servo valves are commonly used in applications requiring high flow rates and fast response times.
